Sri City L_I_H District – Chennai, India
Sri City is a Special Economic Zone located approximately 60 miles north of Chennai, India; it combines an industrial free-trade district with residential, commercial and institutional facilities. Contrary to typical practices for Indian SEZ’s, the Sri City Central District is an open, multifunctional urban city for up to 50,000 inhabitants.
The city’s essential obligation is to adequately house the men and women who build it. The L_I_H District plan is a concept for high-quality affordable housing that will offer a broad range of living arrangements for the working people of the SEZ.
Affordable housing requires intelligent usage of land. The L_I_H district plan overlays a modular residential planning module onto a grid of grid of automobile-capable access streets. Modular flexibility generates an attractive network of pedestrian passages which interconnect the various housing typologies and produce a healthy, humanly-scaled and eminently liveable residential enclave.
