tUrban Public Space: Leopoldstadt

Two buildings with 91 dwellings frame two green urban squares. One building houses live-in studios for visiting and resident artists; the second accommodates apartments with highly flexible layouts intended for new arrivals to the city of Vienna. The theme is intercultural urbanity: not only do the two squares form a neighborhood center; they also create a “mixing chamber” in which artists, new arrivals and long time residents of the second district can sit, eat, play or just rub elbows in urbane surroundings.

Theses interactive public spaces extend into the residential buildings. The generously dimensioned circulation zones merge into the two squares and incorporate spaces for activities, encounters and conversation. The corridors serve as the “interior yards” for each apartment; they are semi-private spaces which extend the dwellings and provide each with room to meet and mingle with the neighbors.
